Ensaio Hamlet (Hamlet Rehearsal). A Hamlet of nesting dolls... The play, as we know, is a fascinating game of dominos that follows a path of despair. Shakespeare sets in motion a group of actors whose interplay propels the action: they act out the death of the assassinated king in order to trap his usurper.
Enrique Diaz’ magnificent performers edge into the spaces between these two performances, the true and false, or straddle both at the same time. A theatre company mounts Hamlet; the character of Hamlet, in turn, mounts a play within the play. Hamlet plays a madman; Ophelia goes truly mad. All the acting of the performers expresses this visible and permanent splitting of personalities; they pass amongst the members of the audience, whispering words in their ears, asking if anyone has seen the ghost... The stage becomes the game board of a kaleidoscopic play of which we are the centre rather than simply the audience.
True to a work that the Brazilian company Dos Atores, directed by Enrique Diaz, has led since 1988, Ensaio Hamlet, puts the face of the actor in the forefront, thereby carrying the signature of a director who is also an actor.
This troupe from Rio de Janeiro carries us off in a whirlwind of phantasmagorias. A theatre within the theatre where Shakespeare becomes our contemporary, our travelling companion. This unique performance was hailed by the Union of Drama Critics (Award for the Best Foreign Performance 2006).
"Two hours of enchantment...a marvel of entertainment, of extravaganza, each detail is a feast for our eyes... Two hours of very beautiful theatre, unusual, unforgettable." Michel Cournot, Le Monde
