The texts of Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of butoh in Japan in the 20th century, will accompany dancer-choreographer Boris Charmatz and actress Jeanne Balibar in an intriguing duet.
Hijakata once wrote: "The body is my workshop; and my profession, known as dancing, is about restoration of the human."
Boris Charmatz aims to incorporate the ironic dimension into his revisiting of Hijakata’s work. Toward this end, Charmatz has imaginined a different type of tomb for Hijikata and his pioneering work, in homage to the phantoms that have been absorbed into the butoh corpus.
Charmatz’s aims to invent an ephemeral monument dedicated to Hijikata, with actress Jeanne Balibar as interpreter of this vision. Language - notably the words of Hijikata - will also be enunciated by both actress and dancer during a performance that will be a quasi homage to the artist and about which Charmatz states as follows: "There is a literature that is still dance, and in Hijikata’s case this literature is not only little known: it is also unheard of; it did not yet exist. It was necessary to steal drafts from a translator to take cognizance of its existence. Suddenly, we are confronted with a treasure that shatters representations."
